Gov. Nixon welcomes Aviation Technical Services to Missouri; company plans to create 500 new jobs at KCI

Aviation Technical Service (ATS) will invest $7.8 million to renovate existing facility at KCI Airport KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Gov. Jay Nixon today welcomed Aviation Technical Services (ATS) to Missouri at the company’s new facility in Kansas City. ATS is one of North America’s largest third-party aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul providers. The company, headquartered in the state of Washington, is expanding its operations and locating a facility at Kansas City International Airport, where they plan to create more than 500 new jobs over the next three to five years. “It’s great to be back in Kansas City with more good news for the region’s growing economy,” said Gov. Nixon. “Just as ATS builds its workforce here in Kansas City, we are building a future for Missouri in which every student graduates ready to compete for the best jobs, and where our low taxes and highly skilled workforce continue to attract those jobs to our state.” ATS was founded in 1970 in Everett, Wash., with only five employees. Since then, the company has grown to become one of the largest suppliers of airframe maintenance in the world, with more than 1,000 workers supporting a global customer base. “We’re very excited to be expanding to Kansas City,” said Matt Yerbic, President and CEO of ATS. “Joining this established and well-known aerospace community will allow us to launch operations quickly in order to support the growing needs of our customers.” The company’s Kansas City facility will be its first location outside the state of Washington. Expanding to Missouri will put Aviation Technical Services closer to some of its largest customers, allowing it to improve customer service and expand its client base. Additionally, Kansas City is home to an international airport and an established aviation department which will provide Aviation Technical Services competitive advantages and opportunities for future growth. “I’m honored to be a part of this first chapter of ATS’ story in Kansas City,” said Mayor Sly James. “ATS had many options for its expansion and they chose our city because of the momentum we’ve established. I’m excited to work with ATS to keep that momentum going.” The company will move into an existing facility at KCI. Renovations are expected to begin in February and the facility is expected to begin operating in April.Last October, the state’s economic development team and local partners visited the company’s headquarters to discuss opportunities for expansions in Kansas City. “This project is a true testament to the strong partnership we have with the state and to the abundant resources Missouri has to offer to the aviation and aerospace industry,”  Mark VanLoh, City of Kansas City, Missouri, Director of Aviation. “Through our participation in state-organized trade activities, we have gained recognition and are able to attract global companies, like Aviation Technical Services, to Kansas City.” To assist Aviation Technical Services with its expansion, the Department of Economic Development and the City of Kansas City have authorized a strategic economic incentive package that the company can receive if it meets strict job creation and investment criteria. The Platte County Economic Development Council, the Kansas City Area Development Council, and the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City also participated in making this announcement possible. Aviation Technical Services Announces New Facility in Kansas City, Missouri

Everett, WA (December 20, 2013) ― Aviation Technical Services (ATS) announced today that it has reached an agreement with the City of Kansas City and the Kansas City, Missouri, Aviation Department to lease a portion of the KCI Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Base at Kansas City International Airport. The operation, which at full capacity will provide ATS with 607,000 square feet of operating space, will create more than 500 new jobs over the next three to five years with potential for 1,000 employees over time. Expanding to Kansas City provides ATS with a convenient location to serve its customer base. ATS plans to invest upwards of $7 million in tooling and equipment to bring the new facility online. With space to house up to 11 narrow-body aircraft or several wide-body and narrow-body aircraft at the same time, ATS intends to offer all major maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services at its Kansas City facility. Over the next three years, ATS expects to invest additional capital as the operation ramps up. “This is yet another step to secure ATS’ future and ensures long-term stability for our customers, employees and company. Expanding to Kansas City in the KCI Overhaul Base allows us to meet existing customer requirements and adds to our platform from which to grow and diversify our service offerings over time.  We plan to continue to grow in new locations that support this model,” said President and CEO, Matt Yerbic. “Once again, Missouri continues to be a global leader in the aerospace and aviation industry,” Gov. Jay Nixon said. “Following Boeing’s decision to bring up to 800 research and IT jobs to the Show-Me State, Aviation Technical Services’ announcement today is further evidence that Missouri’s highly-skilled workforce and pro-business climate make it an outstanding place for companies large and small to prosper. This significant job-creating investment makes it easy to see why Missouri’s unemployment rate has been below the national average for 51 straight months.” “The decision by ATS is one of several commitments made this year to create new manufacturing jobs in our KC region. When new manufacturers serving the auto and aviation industry are added to the growing number of  information technology, logistics and biotech jobs being created by our local companies as well as new, entrepreneurial ventures we have a balanced economy with an upward trajectory,” said Bob Marcusse, President and CEO, Kansas City Area Development Council. Metropolitan Community College has worked to support ATS from the beginning of their site selection, helping them understand the education, training and consulting services the college is able to provide. ATS Awarded AS9100 Certification

Everett, WA (May 29, 2013) ― Aviaton Technical Services (ATS) recently received certification for meeting and fulfilling the requirements of the Quality Management System standards AS9100 Rev C for the scope of “aircraft component, maintenance, alterations, and rework.” According to ATS Senior Quality Manager Nick Heminger, “AS9100 certification is a prestigious credential which required ATS to demonstrate its capability to meet the complex and unique requirements of the aerospace industry. New ATS Facility Timed Perfectly For MRO Demand Rebound

By Sean Broderick avweeksean@gmail.com Source: AWIN First A recently opened facility in Moses Lake, Wash., is helping Aviation Technical Services (ATS) meet increasing demand for heavy airframe maintenance and modifications just a few years after a dip in the market led the company to cut capacity. Following the 2008 recession, U.S. airline carriers saw system available seat miles (ASMs) fall 7.7% in the next two years, according to FAA data. The demand for maintenance — which usually mirrors ASMs — dipped too, leaving many MRO providers with excess capacity. ATS responded by leasing (and later selling) its largest hangar to Boeing in July 2011. ATS consolidated its operations in the remaining 700,000 square feet of space in Everett, keeping the same service offerings — including as many as 20 heavy airframe lines, depending on aircraft mix — on a narrower footprint. Soon, ASMs began to rebound, as did the airframe MRO demand. That put ATS — which used to market itself as the largest single-site independent MRO provider in the business — in the market for new space and a second location. Moses Lake offered several benefits, ATS executives say, among them: lower costs on everything from labor to utilities compared to Everett. Another plus that Moses Lake offers: access to a deep labor pool that includes newly certificated mechanics coming out of nearby Big Bend Community College’s Aviation Maintenance Technology program. ATS Moses Lake welcomed its first customer earlier this year. The facility can handle three to four maintenance lines, depending on aircraft type. ATS President and CEO Matt Yerbic says current work includes 747 heavy checks and 747 tear-downs. “It’s doing exactly what we hoped it would,” Yerbic tells Aviation Week in reference to the new facility. Looking ahead, Yerbic doesn’t expect ATS to shrink again anytime soon. A rebound in U.S. air travel — ASMs were up in 2011 and 2012 — coupled with a bump in interior modifications and add-ons like Wi-Fi equipage means opportunities abound for MRO shops positioned to capitalize. “We’re very bullish,” Yerbic says. “As I look forward into the market, I see a number of high-demand years.”
